Covers the vital era of political independence and, through “case studies” of major countries, examines key trends and developments that have shaped the region and its 21 nations since then. Major topics include 19th century nation-state formation and economic modernization; 20th century urbanization, nationalism, social revolution, military dictatorships, and democratization, including the rise of influential women's (and feminist) movements.
