ATTENTION ALABAMA TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS

If you plan to transfer to UAB from an Alabama Junior College to study Community Health and Human Services – Human Services, this page lists required and recommended courses in Areas I through V, including courses specifically required by UAB in Area V.

This is the transfer page that is referred to in the articulation guide. The AGSC articulation guide and this page comprise the articulation agreement for a major in Community Health and Human Services – Community Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Core Curriculum Requirements

Students transferring from Alabama public two-year and four-year colleges and universities should consult the AGSC site for complete details regarding Areas I-IV for all majors, including the list of approved courses for each institution.

Specific requirements for students planning to transfer to UAB and major in Community Health and Human Services – Human Services are included below.

AREA I - Written Composition (6 semester hours)

AGSC: Requirements include at least 6 semester hours in written composition.

UAB: Students must make at least a "C" or better in each written composition course.

AREA II - Humanities and Fine Arts (12 semester hours)

AGSC: Requirements include at least 12 semester hours in humanities with a minimum of 3 semester hours in literature*, 3 semester hours in the arts, and the remaining semester hours from the humanities and/or fine arts.

*As part of the General Studies Curriculum, students must complete a 6 semester sequence either in literature or history.

UAB: Students are strongly encouraged to fulfill the 6 semester hour literature/history sequence requirement in literature.

AGSC: Students must take one of the following courses:

Alabama Community College System Courses

  • SPH 106 - Fundamentals of Speech of Communication (3 sem. hrs.) or
  • SPH 107 - Fundamentals of Public Speaking (3 sem. hrs.)

UAB: Students must make a grade of "C" or better in the speech course.

UAB: Students are strongly encouraged to fulfill the 6 semester hour literature/history sequence requirement in literature.

AREA III - Natural Sciences and Mathematics (11 semester hours)

AGSC: Requirements include at least 11 semester hours (15 quarter hours) with at least 3 semester hours (5 quarter hours) in mathematics at the pre-calculus algebra level or higher and at least 8 semester hours (10 quarter hours) in the natural sciences which must include laboratory experiences. Disciplines in the natural sciences include but are not limited to, astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, and physics.

  • MTH 112 - Pre-calculus Algebra (or higher) or MTH 110 (Finite Mathematics) (3 sem. hrs.)

UAB: Students are strongly encouraged to complete the following courses:

  • BIO 101 - Introduction to Biology I (4 sem. hrs.) OR
  • BIO 103 - Principles of Biology I (4 sem. hrs.)
  • CHM 101 - Introduction to General Chemistry (4 sem. hrs.)

AREA IV - History, Social, and Behavioral Sciences (12 semester hours)

AGSC: Requirements include 12 semester hours with at least a 3 semester hour course in history* and at least 6 semester hours from among other disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. Disciplines include, but are not limited to, anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology and sociology.

*As part of the General Studies Curriculum, students must complete a 6 semester hour sequence either in literature or history.

UAB: Students are strongly encouraged to fulfill the 6 semester hour literature/history sequence requirement in literature.

UAB: Students are strongly encouraged to complete the following courses:

Alabama Community College System Course

  • PSY 200 General Psychology (3 sem. hrs.)
  • ONE of the following are strongly preferred:
    • ANT 200 Introduction to Anthropology (3 sem. hrs.) or
    • GEO 100 World Regional Geography (3 sem. hrs.) or
    • SOC 200 Introduction to Sociology (3 sem. hrs.)

AREA V - Pre-Professional, Major, and Elective Courses for Community Health and Human Services – Human Services at UAB (20-23 semester hours)
